Bush selects Samuel Alito
Reputation as solid pro-life constitutionalist
President George W. Bush today nominated U.S. Federal District Judge Samuel Alito to fill the Supreme Court vacancy created by the retirement of Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. A graduate of Princeton, Alito was first named to the federal bench by President George H.W. Bush in 1990. Among his rulings include a 1997 case in which he held that a city can sponsor public displays at Christmas. If confirmed he would be the court's fifth Catholic member.
