Earthquakes, mudslides bury 2 villages near Santiago Atitlan

TWO villages in Guatemala were buried under a rush of mud and floodwaters yesterday after the side of a volcano gave way, while a strong earthquake rocked neighbouring El Salvador last night.
Residents said at least 50 people were killed in the landslide in Solola, a town close to the popular tourist destination of Lake Atitlan, that remained cut off from the outside world. It was the deadliest of the floods that have killed 250 people in Central America and southern Mexico.

2,000 feared dead in India-Pakistan quake
ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — A powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake near the Pakistan-India border Saturday reduced villages to rubble, triggered landslides and flattened an apartment building. More than 2,000 people were killed in both nations, and a Pakistan army spokesman called the devastation "a national tragedy."
The toll included 250 girls who died when their school in northwestern Pakistan (search) collapsed. Another 500 students were injured, said Ataullah Khan Wazir, police chief in the northwestern district of Mansehra.
